چکیده

Adrenal hormones, ACTH plasma concentrations and the ultrasonographic evaluation of adrenal glands are considered complementary in clinical evaluations hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis function several species. In dogs, age, size weight have a significant effect on glands. neonatal foals, measurements been demonstrated to be reliable; however, individual variables features has not investigated, usefulness gland ultrasonography is still known. The aims this study were: (i) provide compare ultrasound healthy newborn Thoroughbred Standardbred assess any sex them; (ii) steroid hormone foals two breeds. Venous blood samples images were collected from 10 foals. Ultrasonographic obtained adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), progesterone (P4) aldosterone assessed. ACTH/cortisol, ACTH/progesterone, ACTH/aldosterone, ACTH/DHEA cortisol/DHEA ratios calculated. A positive correlation was found between height right foal’s weight; width left medulla significantly lower Thoroughbreds than Standardbreds. Cortisol higher lower, respectively, compared with ratio Thoroughbreds. This provides reference ranges for suggests presence breed-related differences measurements, plasmatic cortisol concentrations. detected could suggest different response environmental stimulation

Ultrasonographic adrenal gland measurements in clinically normal small breed dogs and comparison with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism.

Ultrasonography is a sensitive and specific screening method for assessing the adrenal glands. The upper limit of the normal adrenal gland width is used as 7.5 mm. It is not known if adrenal gland width remains consistent with body weight. A reliable criterion of adrenal gland width in small breed dogs should be established. Small breed dogs with body weights of less than 10 kg were divided int...

Thyroid Hormone Levels in Thoroughbred Mares and Their Foals at Parturition

A high percentage of Thoroughbred mares and their foals on two large farms in central Kentucky were found to have low thyroid hormone levels (lower than established levels) at the time of parturition, even though management on the farms near the time of foaling varied. A number of factors were identified that could have contributed to the low levels of thyroid hormones in these mares and foals,...

Plasma Adrenomedullin Concentrations in Critically Ill Neonatal Foals

BACKGROUND Bacterial sepsis remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal foals, but accurate diagnostic and prognostic markers are lacking. Adrenomedullin (AM) is a polypeptide with diverse biologic effects on the cardiovascular system that increases in septic humans and laboratory animals. HYPOTHESES Plasma AM concentration (p[AM]) is increased in septic neonatal foals comp...

Relation between Proepileptic Activity of Indomethacin and Adrenal Gland Hormones

The role of inflammation has been shown in the pathogenesis of epilepsy, while glucocorticoids and adrenaline have anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of adrenaline, prednisolone, and indomethacin on caffeine-induced epilepsy (epileptiform activity) in rats and to examine the mechanism of the pro-epileptic effect of indomethacin. The adrenalect...
